dp+ Pick - top 9 ranking - photo challenge 7 - some kind of bride

For our theme "Some Kind of Bride", 11 entries made it to the dp+ Pick.  It means only 11 entries made it to the judges' top 3 choices. If all 5 judges would each have their own different set of top 3 picks, there would be 15 entries included here instead of 10. It means that one or more judges chose the same entries in their top 3 picks.

Instead of 11 rankings, however, there will only be Top 9 Ranks. 3 entries tied at Top 6 slot all scoring 90/500 each. They are Steven Ee Kin Cheung, Lara Juan and Jennifer Hamilton. 2 entries got a 5 points deduction each for having watermarks on their entries. They are Joey Yepez from 100/500 to 95/500 and Srimon Buro, from 96/500 to 91/500.

2 entries vied for the Top Pick position. Both got picked by 3 judges on their top 3 picks. They are entries by Fidel Fernandez and Kamilovich Karpov. Fidel Fernandez was picked 2 times as Top choice and 1 2nd Pick. Kamilovich Karpov, on the other hand, got all Top Pick choices from the 3 judges who added his entry to their picks. Total score for Fidel Fernandez is 281/500 while Kamilovich Karpov got 293/500.

There were 5 judges as before, 1 is part of the dp+ administration and 4 are select members of the group. Each judge picked their top 3 choices from all the entries and scored them based on 4 criteria which include Quality or the technical aspect of the photo (30%), Creativity and Originality (30%), Theme Adaptation (20%) and Overall Impact or Impression (20%). Each also gave their reasons for their picks. A total of 100% per judge is the perfect score in all categories per entry. Final perfect score is 500 points with 100 point percentage from each of the 5 judges. The one who gets the highest score wins.

So here are the 9 entries who made it to the dp+ Pick top 9 ranks and their rankings in reverse order from top 9 to top 1:

Top 9: Entry 9 - Rhoda Corpuz - “Still Attentive" - Fujifilm FinePix S6000fd - 70/500

judges top 3 choices for dp+Pick, photo challenge 7

Judge 1

3rd pick - Entry 38 - Jennifer Hamilton - "Waiting for Photos" - Nikon D3100
Quality - 28/30
Creativity and Originality - 26/30
Theme Adaptation - 18/20
Overall Impression - 18/20
TOTAL - 90/100
Remark: Fresh, candid, real. No choregraphed feel. Though there are 3 subjects, the focus of the eyes lead to the bride. Clever composition. I would have chosen this as my 2nd, had the "Perrier" on the umbrella was a bit subdued. It appears like a Perrier commercial.

2nd pick - Entry 5 - Fidel Fernandez - "In Rome with Love" - Nikon D40
Quality - 28/30
Creativity and Originality - 28/30
Theme Adaptation - 19/20
Overall Impression - 19/20
TOTAL - 94/100
Remark: Beautiful composition. Adheres to the theme. Brilliant color scheme. I love how the bus adds dynamism and fun in the moment. The bride is beautiful as well.

1st pick - Entry 3 - Kamilovich Karpov - "Feeling Higher" - Nikon D200
Quality - 28/30
Creativity and Originality - 29/30
Theme Adaptation - 20/20
Overall Impression - 20/20
TOTAL - 97/100
Remark: The photo is "all about the bride", though it tells a thousand stories. I love how the picture has captured the moment. Unconventional but beautiful.

Judge 2
3rd pick – Entry 9 - Rhoda Corpuz - “Still Attentive" - Fujifilm FinePix S6000fd
Quality - 15/30
Creativity and Originality - 20/30
Theme Adaptation - 20/20
Overall Impression - 15/20
TOTAL - 70/100
Remark:
The bride charming, the groom to wait on her at this very early stage of their marriage. They said we should look for an “out-of-the-box version of the bride”, well, you can’t get any more out-of-the-box than that.

2nd pick – Entry 15 - Lara Juan - “Got You” - Nikon D40
Quality - 25/30
Creativity and Originality - 30/30
Theme Adaptation - 20/20
Overall Impression - 15/20
TOTAL - 90/100
Remark:
I like how the photographer captured the moment where the bride’s playfulness and humor surfaced in the midst of stress and pressure.

1st pick – Entry 5 - Fidel Fernandez - “In Rome With Love” - Nikon D40
Quality - 25/30
Creativity and Originality - 30/30
Theme Adaptation - 20/20
Overall Impression - 20/20
TOTAL - 95/100
Remark:
I saw the baby in the stroller looking at the couple, and that nailed the shot.

Judge 3
3rd pick - Entry 23 - Edgar Valido - "The Limo Bride" - Nikon Coolpix
Quality - 25
Creativity and Originality - 20
Theme Adaptation - 15
Overall Impression - 15
TOTAL - 75
Remark: Remark: It's the only image that really fall under the bride category if we will settle for the "category" but since we're not... that's another story.  Anyway, I love the way the photographer captured the overall look. I think it's a good idea to really do something like this to a real bride during a wedding.

2nd pick - Entry 12 - Zandro Cenizal - "The Awaited Beloved" - Nikon D90
Quality - 25
Creativity and Originality - 25
Theme Adaptation - 15
Overall Impression - 18
TOTAL - 83
Remark: I love the emotion of this image... for me making bride out of someone is being with her during the times when things don't fall the way we want them. The photo says a lot beyond words.

1st pick - Entry 5 - Fidel Fernandez - "In Rome with Love" - Nikon D40
Quality - 28
Creativity and Originality - 28
Theme Adaptation - 18
Overall Impression - 18
TOTAL - 92
Remark:  The smile says it all... the only emotion a bride should have... being happy... till the end.

Judge 4
3rd pick - Entry 1 - Alvin's Art - "Emotions" - Pentax KM
Quality - 28/30
Creativity and Originality - 30/30
Theme Adaptation - 18/20
Overall Impression - 18/20
TOTAL - 94/100
Remark: This entry shows an intriguing pose and effect. The bride has a mysterious look which hints at her emotions of the day and what the future may hold for her.

2nd pick - Entry 20 - Joey Yepez - "The Bride" - Nikon 300
Quality - 30/30
Creativity and Originality - 30/30
Theme Adaptation - 20/20
Overall Impression - 20/20
DEDUCTION: 5 points (watermark)
TOTAL - 95/100
Remark: This photo is very unique. The focus seems to be more on the church rather than the bride. However, I feel there is some symbolism between the bride and the vast changes in her life that she will experience once she steps through the door. The watermark kept this picture from being  number 1 on my list.

1st pick - Entry 3 - Kamilovich Karpov - "Feeling Higher" - Nikon D200
Quality - 28/30
Creativity and Originality - 30/30
Theme Adaptation - 20/20
Overall Impression - 20/20
TOTAL - 98/100
Remark: This is such a fun magical moment captured by the camera. I love the look on the subject's face and the smiles from friends and family. The bride is definitely the center of attention.
The facial expression shown is only a hint of the joy to come in the bride's life.

Judge 5

3rd pick - Entry 7 - Steven Ee Kim Cheng - "Emotions" - Pentax KM
Quality - 30/30
Creativity and Originality - 25/30
Theme Adaptation - 15/20
Overall Impression - 20/20
TOTAL - 90/100
Remark: A different kind of bride in a way that she is listless and appearing to have unscalable misgivings in pushing through with the marriage. The uncertainty in the eyes speaks a lot. Definitely focused on the bride. I love the look of delicacy and vulnerability. Amazing flesh tone and lighting. There is just the glamour shot feel to it - that prevented me from putting it on top of my other picks.

2nd pick - Entry 27 - Srimon Buro - "Bless the Bride" - Canon 60D
Quality - 28/30
Creativity and Originality - 28/30
Theme Adaptation - 20/20
Overall Impression - 20/20
DEDUCTION: 5 points (watermark)
TOTAL - 91/100
Remark: 3 things I did in judging the photos. First I looked for a photo focused on the bride herself which is the main theme. Second, it shouldn't look contrived. Third, it should look like an exceptional bride photo to be "some kind of bride" as per theme. This shot has it all. It is an honest to goodness bride photo reflecting the customs and tradition of a particular place. Definitely centered on a beautiful bride as the main subject that's been captured beautifully, too.

1st pick - Entry 3 - Kamilovich Karpov - "Feeling Higher" - Nikon D200
Quality - 28/30
Creativity and Originality - 30/30
Theme Adaptation - 20/20
Overall Impression - 20/20
TOTAL - 98/100
Remark: It is not everyday that you see a bride being lifted like so to the amazement of the crowd. Though there were other elements, it is obvious that it is still the bride who is the center of attention. I love the triumphant look on the bride's face. It was an extraordinary bride photo where the moment was captured magnificently.

Special Mention

There were 4 professionally done entries in the photo challenge. They are entries by Joey Yepez, Paeng Balen, Benjax Rivera and Derlin Zhang. They are awesome pieces of work that I feel do not quite fit the bill of the unconventional bride shot set as theme of photo challenge 7  but they are worth mentioning nevertheless.

Joey Yepez
Remark: Joey Yepez' entry looks more focused on the church rather than the bride but it is a very creative piece of work.

Paeng Balen
Remark: Paeng Balen's entry is a typical bride portrait but what makes it special is the way it emulated film and its perfect exposure.

Benjax Rivera
Remark: Benjax Rivera's entry has a classic appeal but still the conventional type of bride photo.

Derlin Zhang
Remark: Derlin Zhang's entry is a very good artistic shot but it doesn't look much like a bride photo.

To all dp+ members who made it to the dp+ Pick, congratulations!

July theme for dp+ photo challenge 8

photo by Gina Vi of Gina Vi, one of dp+ Facebook administrators

“Taking pictures is savoring life intensely, every hundredth of a second.” - Marc Riboud

The month of July is the anniversary month of Digital Photography Plus since it started as a Facebook group on July 17, 2012. It started shortly after Friendster, another social networking folded. dp+ has been in existence as a Friendster group since 2007.

So for the 8th photo challenge, our July 1st year anniversary theme is photographer photo.

It is the photographer that is our main subject here without major photo manipulation. It can be the photographer him/herself taking a photograph of him/herself. It can also be the photographer taking the photo of another photographer. It can be a professional, an amateur or a hobbyist. By photographer photo, we mean the one behind the camera taking the photo.

In photography, it is not the camera that matters more but the eye or the photographer behind the lens. So it is but fitting that for our dp+ anniversary theme would be a subject that is close to our hearts that we can all easily identify with and relate to.

Since only minor photo manipulation is acceptable, please check out our mechanics on what covers acceptable photo manipulation all through our photo challenges.  Here is the link:
