dp+ Judges top 3 picks, scores and remarks - photo challenge 4

For our 4th photo challenge with Celebrating Woman/Women as theme - only 11 entries made it to the dp+ Pick. A tough one also like the 3rd photo challenge since this time even the judges, too, appear to have different interpretations of the theme thus a varying top picks each. As was customary, there were 5 judges and only their scores and remarks would appear, not actually naming who picked who for impartiality. Here are the judges' top 3 picks each with corresponding scores on each criteria and their remark on why it was part of their top 3 choices:

Judge no. 1
3rd pick - Entry 18 - Shoot Mee (Keith S.) - "Filipina" - Canon 5D
Quality - 26/30
Creativity and Originality - 25/30
Theme Adaptation - 20/20
Overall Impression - 16/20
TOTAL - 87/100
Remark: Easily a postcard shot that represents the beauty of a Filipina. Behind the smile is not just a kind and loving woman, but a tough and hard-working woman as well. This well-framed shot is a tribute to women, with a Filipino touch.

2nd pick - Entry 6 - Zandro Cenizal - "has a purpose through the years" - Nikon D90
Quality - 25/30
Creativity and Originality - 27/30
Theme Adaptation - 20/20
Overall Impression - 18/20
TOTAL - 90/100
Remark: The image produced was tact-sharp with impeccable play on probably, ambient light. The approach in greyscale really emphasized the golden years of the subject. I couldn't help but be reminded of my hard-working grandmother. This entry is really quite a good tribute to all the women in the world. If not for the watermark, this could have landed first on my list.

1st pick - Entry 31 - Chito Francisco - "Woman as Warrior" - Canon 500D
Quality - 28/30
Creativity and Originality - 26/30
Theme Adaptation - 20/20
Overall Impression - 18/20
TOTAL - 92/100
Remark: The cinematic effect in all aspects of the photo really captured my attention. Showed the beauty, resilience and strength of a woman. This is such an inspirational shot to all the women.

Judge no. 2
3rd pick - Entry 4 - Lily Vinluan - "There's always the window if the door closes"  - Canon 600D
Quality - 28/30
Creativity and Originality - 25/30
Theme Adaptation - 18/20
Overall Impression - 18/20
TOTAL - 89/100
Remark: The look on the subject's face tells you a lot about the experiences she's been through. This photo has no fancy post-processing - what you see is what you get. Good old composition, a well balanced photo.

2nd pick - Entry 6 - Zandro Cenizal - "has a purpose through the years" - Nikon D90
Quality - 28/30
Creativity and Originality - 28/30
Theme Adaptation - 18/20
Overall Impression - 18/20
TOTAL - 92/100
Remark: Aptly titled, well executed and the choice of presenting it in black and white is what makes this photo unique.

1st pick - Entry 33 - Docx de Jesus - "The Prayer Warrior" - Canon 500D
Quality - 28/30
Creativity and Originality - 30/30
Theme Adaptation - 20/20
Overall Impression - 20/20
TOTAL - 98/100
Remark: I've seen a ton of this kind of photo, but this photo has its own story. Seldom do I see a face so full of wisdom and hope that this photo almost made me cry. Great execution! Love the black and white!

Judge no. 3
3rd pick - Entry 12 - Sallie Tumlison - "I wish I could remember" - Nikon D7000
Quality - 30/30
Creativity and Originality - 10/30
Theme Adaptation - 20/20
Overall Impression - 10/20
TOTAL - 70/100
Remark: It tells a tale of perseverance of a woman and what she accomplished even when faced with such adversity in life. Truly a photo of strength showing the theme.

2nd pick - Entry 7 - Sam Ade - "Will always be waiting for you" - Canon 7D
Quality - 30/30
Creativity and Originality - 30/30
Theme Adaptation - 10/20
Overall Impression - 20/20
TOTAL - 90/100
Remark: Fantastic composition with idea in mind. What comes first to mind is that the off focus was done on purpose to portray the photographer's side of his story.

1st pick - Entry 29 - Borj Meneses - "Her shadow and curves" - Canon 5D Mark II
Quality - 21/30  (too much noise in photo)
Creativity and Originality - 30/30
Theme Adaptation - 20/20
Overall Impression - 20/20
TOTAL - 91/100
Remark: Creativity has been achieved. Showing the partial nude model has certainly brought out the feminine substance. Although nude, it has shown the qualities or appearance traditionally associated with women like delicacy and prettiness. A job well done to the owner.

Judge no. 4
3rd pick - Entry 12 - Sallie Tumlison - "I wish I could remember" - Nikon D7000
Quality - 10/30
Creativity and Originality - 10/30
Theme Adaptation - 15/20
Overall Impression - 20/20
TOTAL - 55/100
Remark: The picture shows a woman who was full of life, and now is not, but is still a sister and mother and friend to her family. Even with this disease, she can still be a celebrated woman for what she has been through and what she has done for others in her life. I love the color treatment in this sad compositon which gives the feeling of anguish and sadness in the woman living in the Nursing Home.

2nd pick - Entry 37 - Jimboy Caminade Sanchez - "Greatest inspiration" - Nikon D90
Quality - 20/30
Creativity and Originality - 20/30
Theme Adaptation - 15/20
Overall Impression - 20/20
TOTAL - 75/100
Remark: I picked this to be 2nd because it has a mother and son enjoying the beauty of nature together and the simple things in life. A beautiful composition with the feeling of hope!

1st pick - Entry 22 - Joey Yepez - "Bridesmaids" - Nikon D300
Quality - 20/30
Creativity and Originality - 20/30
Theme Adaptation - 20/20
Overall Impression - 20/20
TOTAL - 80/100
Remark: It is celebrating happy times and getting together for important occasions with their women friends and family to celebrate life!
I love this beautiful expressive image - so full of life, I can feel the mood. Beautiful quality image and lifelike!
Perfect lighting and color too! An instant image that draws you in right at first site! It grabs you! That is why I picked this for first pick! Happy image!

Judge no. 5
3rd pick - Entry 8 - Glenn Buenaventura - "Happiness" - Canon 7D
Quality - 28/30
Creativity and Originality - 28/30
Theme Adaptation - 18/20
Overall Impression - 20/20
TOTAL - 94/100
Remark: Celebrating woman/women is all about giving honor or showing them in their best light in an image. One of the best depiction that celebrates a woman is her photo as a bride - her being honored with a promise of a lifetime of love and devotion. There are lots of bride photos among the entries but I pick this one because it is celebratory in nature. What better way to celebrate a bride than with that look of triumph and happiness written all over her face. Classic in black and white, beautiful composition, too!!

2nd pick - Entry 22 - Joey Yepez - "Bridesmaids" - Nikon D300
Quality - 30/30
Creativity and Originality - 27/30
Theme Adaptation - 20/20
Overall Impression - 29/20
TOTAL - 96/100
Remark:
A candid and genuine expression of joy that brought beauty to even such ordinary women forms and faces, it is a celebration of life and friendship between women. Picture perfect fleshtone and lighting and even the background. So natural and engaging!

1st pick - Entry 7 - Sam Ade - "Will always be waiting for you" - Canon 7D
Quality - 30/30
Creativity and Originality - 30/30
Theme Adaptation - 17/20
Overall Impression - 20/20
TOTAL - 97/100
Remark: When judging photos I don't give much weight on the caption or what the photographer has to say about his/her piece. I just look at the photos and let it speak to me with its own visual message. Undeniably a woman form, not even a glamorized silhouette of one - just a woman in utter simplicity and mystery, an understated force to reckon with. Simple yet speaks volume that celebrates a woman's mystic. Creatively done, I appreciate how the photographer subdued and contained his subject to present a remarkable, powerful piece.

Note: Names of the judges will be posted in the succeeding web entry.
